Sarah is our new “Angel of the Night”
My middle daughter, Sarah, is 22 years old. She graduated from the University of Oregon in June 2005. She joined the Peace Corps and is working in Guinea, West Africa. She was sent there to teach the students Physics, in French (which she had to learn). Our family is very proud of her, but at the same time nervous about her being so far away. She is having the experience of a lifetime and really enjoys what she does.
The holidays were especially difficult; we were able to speak to her on Thanksgiving but not Christmas. So many of our letters and packages never arrive but we keep sending them because you never know. Of course what she wants us to send is so minor by our standards and we realize how much we take for granted.
The song that comes to mind when I think of all of the Peace Corps volunteers is from the movie American Tail, “Somewhere Out There.” I look at the sky and imagine that my daughter is maybe looking at the same sky and I feel a little closer to her.
The young people that volunteer to go to these countries and help are so very special and I just wanted to let others know. Thank you so much.
