Dedications to Make

Meet ‘Angel of the Night’ Deborah O’Guin and her loving daughter Dalawna

Dalawna writes,”On June 29, 2004 an angel came to my rescue. That was the night my mom rearranged her life of 50 years to come live with and support me through graduate school. I was accepted into a School Psychology graduate program that was to start in August and I was advised by my professors that it would not be possible to work and take graduate courses. As a single parent, my mom felt that her only option was to be where ever I was in order to help me financially. For her this meant leaving her hometown, her parents, siblings, best friends and, her job of 25 years to move to a college town to live with me.

Deborah & Dalawna

This was a huge sacrifice on her part, with all that she so graciously gave up, in the name of seeing her daughter succeed. She has brought me so much more than we ever could have imagined by moving here. In the beginning it was primarily a financial decision, but she has also provided me with the emotional support and the motivation I sometimes need to keep going. She understands the times that I have to be away for study sessions, research groups, and other school related functions, yet she seems to thrive on my happiness and successes. I cannot begin to explain what it is like to come home after a long day of school and lay my head in my Mama's lap to rest before beginning another four hours of homework.

I sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to repay her for all that she has done throughout my life. I will be 27 years old when I am finished with school, and I can only pray that as a successful School Psychologist I will have another 27 years or more to take care of my mom as she has done for me. I often ask her if she is happy in our current situation and if she ever doubts the decisions that were made and every time she lovingly says ‘I wouldn't be happy if I were anywhere else!’. I realize now that until I am a mother myself, I can never truly understand the sacrifices a mother will make to see her daughter succeed. I thank God everyday for the unselfish person he has sent to be my Mama...my strength“.
